How to Build a Bun Kit

There’s nothing worse than rushing off to ballet class or rehearsal and then realizing that you don’t have all of the stuff you need to do your bun.  Like most dancers, my daughter is required to wear a neat, super slicked back and flat bun to class and rehearsals. But sometimes–and it seems like most of the time–we are running late or running straight from school and she has to do her hair in the car.  It seems it’s always on those types of days that we discover that some or all of the hair stuff gets left at home. If we are lucky, we might find some of the necessary items to do a bun “floating” around in the car, left over from when my daughter took her hair out on the way home from a late night rehearsal. But if we aren’t that lucky, in a state of complete panic, we end up making a mad dash to a grocery store or drug store on the way where I frantically buy all of the stuff she already has, but needs desperately at that moment.

It was after one of these days that I had a brilliant idea: The Emergency Bun Kit.  I decided that I would put together a small kit of emergency bun making supplies and keep one in my car, my husband’s car and even my mom’s car because sometimes she takes my daughter to class or rehearsal. I figured it should have enough supplies to make a bun in a pinch and yet be small enough that it could easily be stored in the car. That way if she discovered she was missing some or even all of her hair stuff, she would have everything she needed right in the car.

What items should be included in an emergency bun kit?  Here is a list of the items that I included in my daughter’s kit or kits (plural because we needed one for every vehicle she rides in):

Comb and/or Small Travel Brush like this:

Hair Elastics, we prefer these:

Bobby Pins already in a neat little case like this:

Hair Nets like these:

Travel Size Hair Gel or Mousse (I find mousse works best if you don’t have a spray bottle of water on hand). This is what we use:

Travel Size Hair Spray (I love this brand for making all of those little flyaways stay put)

Of course you can put all of these little items in a plastic zip top bag or you could use a more durable and cute little, clear, zippered bag like this:

It’s easy and cheapest just to order everything on Amazon and then put the kits together when all of the stuff arrives.  However, I did find a bun kit already assembled and in it’s own little case from Bloch, but you would still need to add a brush and or comb along with mousse and/or hair spray.

Whichever way you decide to do it, an emergency bun kit can be a life saver. It can save you from having to drive like a race-car driver and your daughter from having to do saut de chats down the hair aisle in the drug store while she gathers all of her forgotten hair stuff (yes my daughter has done that).  Just remember to replenish any supplies that get used up or don’t find their way back to the kit.
